Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
