EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
